LFS #8714 is my Linux from Scratch ID... basically instead of using Slackware or Redhat or anything like that you build your own linux installation all from scratch. You can check it out at www.linuxfromscratch.org... its a great way to learn lots about linux.

P.S. you're hearing from me right now cause I found a bar that actually has a PC w/ an internet connection in it... pretty sweet... wish the bars back in Pittsburgh had this stuff...

have you tried taking the advice of the header file... moving files from /usr/src/linux to /usr/src/linux../build... or whatever the error message said?... it looks like at this point you may have to start editing C source code... think you're up for it?

tell you what, wrestle with it till monday... maybe even email the folks you got the driver from and see what they say... then I'll download it on monday and see if I can install it on my system (which is a 2.5.67 kernel... so if it installs there... it'll install anywhere)

later for now... right now my friends are dragging me away to meet my mortal enemy Mr. Cuervo...

laters man,
jpbarto

i solved it but

i found the problem which i was suppposed to edit the makefle to make it look to -I/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include" instead of /usr/src/include/linux

i made it and then run make with no error msg
but when running make install i got those errors

------------------
cc -D__KERNEL__ -I/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/include -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O -fno-strict-aliasing -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -march=i686 -malign-functions=4 -DMODULE -c -o ali_5451.o ali_5451.c
cc1: warning: -malign-functions is obsolete, use -falign-functions
ld -r main.o cmi9739.o cmi9738.o sis_7018.o via_82cxxx.o intel_ichx.o ali_5451.o -o cmaudio.o
[root@localhost cmaudio]# make install
mkdir -p //lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/sound
install -b -m 644 cmaudio.o //lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/sound
install -b -m 644 -o root cmaudio.o //lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/sound
/sbin/depmod -a
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cmaudio.o
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.21-0.13mdk/kernel/drivers/sound/cmaudio.o~
[root@localhost cmaudio]#

should i remove anythin or prog related to my sound card before installing that driver or what?

safrout, not completely unsure, but I think that when 2.4 became 2.5 that many modules switched from being in such places as '/lib/modules/2.x.x/kernel/driver/... to /lib/modules/2.5.x.../sound/... which could leave to unresolved symbols... is it possible to 'modprobe cmaudio' before modprobing the recently built audio modules??

ok... lets (for arguments sake) run through this... you reboot the machine, there are no modules loaded at all for sound or sound cards or alsa or anything... then you execute 'modprobe soundcore' and 'modprobe cmaudio'... then after this you start Gnome or KDE or something like that? Then you open XMMS or some other mp3 player... and the sound quality is horrible correct?

Ok... first I'm going to suggest we remove some variables... if you start Gnome or KDE I understand that often they will start some sort of sound daemon... to eliminate any possibility of this we'll have you start in 'twm'... to do this execute as user 'xinit /usr/X11/bin/twm'... then when that opens up bring up an xterm window and start your mp3 player from the command prompt. If the sound is still shady then we know the problem probably lies with the sound card driver...

by the way what is the wm and mp3 player you use?

possible solutions to handling a bad driver (it might just not be written well)... would be maybe to have a sound daemon running on top of the sound device (my favorite up till recent has been esd... however I'm reevaluating at the moment to see if there's something better out there).

as far as my lfs system, it was built against 2.4.19 (the stock lfs kernel) but now runs on 2.5.67... 2.5.67 is the only kernel that supports my 8x agp port. Now I have to hack the ATI kernel modules though to run with the new kernel... should be interesting.

as for computer knowledge... I've been playing with pcs for 11 years, linux for 6, and I've been writing code just about since I first touched a keyboard. if you're looking at getting into writing code... I'd suggest starting with Java... learning Java you'll learn some great things like object oriented programming using a syntax very similiar to C/C++ and the compiler and error messages are much more human readable than some of the C error messages.

just my $0.02
