Unhappy Sound Card on Toshiba Laptop not being recognized by Gentoo

The title pretty much says it; I have a Toshiba Satilite laptop, and the sound doesn't work under Gentoo. Having tried out Knoppix occasionally while I was installing it, I know that the hardware does in fact work. Gentoo just fails to do whatever it is Linux does to actually use it as a sound card. Any ideas would be appreciated, and I can post results of various error messages (such as "modprobe intel_snd_hda"[sic]) on request.

Is CONFIG_SND_HDA_INTEL the right driver? You could reboot with a knoppix cd to check.

If so "modprobe snd-hda-intel" should work.

Loading that module doens't get sound wokring. It does get alsamixer to work, but there are no primary output devices.

xmms reports an error of "failed to open audio output: OSS Driver 1.2.10

================================================================
(this uses the results of "lsmod | cut -f1 -d' ' | sort" from botting Knoppix 5.0, and then what was on Gentoo after loading some modules)
