Check if device is supported by system first.
#su
<pw>
#lspci
if you find your soun device among listed then again as root
#alsaconfig

Unable to find alsaconfig ....it is not recognized by Linux machine .
I have a RH9 machine .

The output of lspci is ....

Hmmm, There were several threads on "01:0a.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)" problems reported because of Intel build-in cards. If I'm not mistaken RH has its own
"secretly":) developped package caled soundconfig. I remember it since 2002, when I tried RH first time. Soundconfig is special package for PNP sound devices
