Question Sound Card issues

I have an older model Packard Hell computer, mid 90's, (no the BIOS isn't stored on a HD partition, thank (insert diety name here...) ), however, it does have a soundcard that is basically integrated into the motherboard. It uses a cable to run to the motherboard instead of a PCI, or even an ISA, expansion slot. I don't know much more about it, other than when I installed Linux on my box, it's the only thing I haven't been able to get to work yet. Any ideas out there?

type dmesg and sift through the output for something that could be the sound card. If you are confident that the hardware was detected then your problem is likely that you don't have a sound server started. Try typing "esd" and see if it makes a noise. Distros like RH don't enable sound by default, for some totally insane reason.

Also check over the mobo itself for what is written on the chips. The 'SoundPro' (also known as the CMI8330 or CMI8738) chips were very common. A lot of PCChips mobos used them. Even though it is a chip on the motherboard, it still communicates to the rest of the computer through either an ISA or a PCI bus, so setup will be the same.
