Sound card issue
 

Hi all,

recently installed Mandrake 10.1 Official on my Gateway laptop (Pentium 4). Everything installed and configured correctly except for the sound card (although it said it was configured correctly).

When I attempt to play an mp3 (or when any other program makes a sound), I get an extremely annoying random-ish pulsating sound.

I used to have Mandrake 9.2 on this machine and the sound never gave me a problem.

Kernel is 2.6.8.1.

Going into Harddrake (Mandrake's hardwire config program), I have the following info:

I tried using the ALSA drive (snd-maestro3). I had to install the driver from the Mandrake disks. This doesn't seem to work.

So, what to do? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Configure bars with arrows, enable or disable service with "m" key.
When done ESC
#alsactl store
P.S. If you have 5.1 speaker system, be sure that LFE channels bars are all way down and [off]. LFE channel is to generate 5.1 emulation matrix on 4 speaker systems.

thanks for posting so quickly.

After typing alsamixer, I got this message:

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

I guess I don't have alsa installed correctly (or at all). Where to go from here?

Install alsa packages. I do not have Mandrake but everybody says that it can be done with interactive setup the install disk has. Otherwise, from alsa website.
