Red face Sound card detection problem

Hi friends
I am using fedora core 4 in my intel p4 (2.8 gz) with intel motherboard machine. My sound card was disabled initially( I am using onboard soundcard), but when I enabled sound card, the machine failed to boot (It stops when initializing hardware). Otherwise it will show an error message after booting (I have given the error message below).
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Can somebody
help me. Thanks in advance.
Regards
Arun

What are you using for sound (OSS, ALSA, etc)?

You should make sure that the driver for your sound card is in your kernel (built-in or as a module). You can check your kernel config to see what you have currently.

If it is a module that needs to be loaded, did it load? Run lsmod and see what you have up. Not there? Try loading it manually.

dmesg or syslog might tell you some useful information.

Finally, on some computers you may even have to disable quick boot in order for your sound to work. This is the case on my IBM TP 600E - a machine notorious for having sound issues in linux.

These are all general tips, but they may help.
