Sound card configuration

I have no sound on my now multimedia-laden system, understandable since it went unconfigured during installation. (I was more concerned with ensuring the network and video cards worked; I wanted to come back to the sound later.) However, now when I reboot into the upgrader on the install CD 1, I see no option to configure sound cards. Also, in the terminal the commands 'sndconfig' and 'harddrake' won't work. (I get a command unknown error.) Sigh. Any ideas?

Try mcc or alsaconf (as root) in a terminal.

Well, I did a bit of scrounging and found out that the card I was using was a Sound Blaster 16 Wavemaster. The only other sound card I had lying around sndconfig has told me specifically is not supported. Now, I'm not all too familiar with PC hardware, but I notice that the card that isn't supported plugs into some smaller, white PCI slots whereas the Sound Blaster one plugged into a larger, black PCI slot. What is the difference between the two different PCI slots?

Also, to get my sound issue resolved:

*Does anyone know of a way to get my Sound Blaster 16 to work? I've found a few sites with links to Howto's on google, but none of the links seem to work any longer.

EDIT:

Never mind, alsaconf apparently got my non-Sound Blaster card to work. (THough it apparently isn't very good. Sound quality kinda sucks.) Thanks much for the tip, but in the evnt that I wanna upgrade my sound card, are there any particular ones out there that tend to work withn Linux that I should look for?
