Sound Card

Is there a way to remove the sound card in Mandrake 9.1 and then let it find it. I ask because I changed the driver and it stopped working. And I can not get it change back to the old one that worked. I changed it because when I play MP3's in KDE it skips. Thanks

Can anyone tell me how to change the soundcard. In the Mandrake control center it will not change back. If I click on it now it just locks up the center and I have to xkill it. Help....

Here is the error I get:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

If you're really stuck, you can shut down the machine, physically remove the device, restart the machine and let it discover that you have now remove it, then shut down the machine again, re-insert the card, and start - it'll say 'found a new device' and configure it. That is, of course, unless it is an onboard soundcard.

Alternatively, you could edit (as root) the file /etc/modules.conf and remove (place a # infront of) any line that refers to your soundcard. Reboot the machine and then configure it correctly.

If you want, if you know which module (Linux's name for 'drivers') to use, you can edit the /etc/modules.conf file to show your card properly.

Or... just another option... open DrakConf (Mandrake Control Center), go to Harddrake and select your soundcard and configure it from there.

Hope these help.

I tried all but removing the card. It is a Laptop so I can not do that. In the end I just reinstalled the OS. It is now working. I have sound and all.

But when I look at the IRQ's my system is using I see that the sound card is sharing with other items. I think this might be part of the problem. I get skipping some times in sound. When I am playing MP3's. Is there a way to move IRQ's in Linux? I am sure there is but I am still new to Linux.
