Sound Card

Hi guys,

I'm new to linux especially Red Hat 9. I just installed a dual boot between linux and xp on my computer. It works fine, except Red Hat, however, my audio sound doesn't work. Red Hat 9 is able to detect the card and I'm able to test it and it works but when I play audio files such as mp3, cd, and games, I receive no sound. Please help me out. Your help is appreciated.

i810: Intel ICH2 found at IO 0xe000 and 0xdc00, MEM 0x0000 and 0x0000, IRQ 11
i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels.
i810_audio: Defaulting to base 2 channel mode.
i810_audio: Resetting connection 0
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: ALG16 (ALC200/200P)
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0 supports AMAP, total channels = 2

uname -a:
Linux localhost 2.4.20-6 #1 Thu Feb 27 10:06:59 EST 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

lspci | grep -i multi :

I test it from sound graphical window. I receirve the sound from there and am able to hear sound as i move and click around the desktop but no sound when I play audio/video files such as mp3, cd music, games, and video files.

hey man,

i have no experience with Red Hat, but considering that you are using an old kernel, it necessary that you install the alsa library by hand.
probably, some guys will argue that you should stick with oss. i personaly disagree. like everything in linux, it is a question of choice.
i recommend a look at www.alsa-project.org.
try to find the recommendations for your card.
about your problem, i think that the other applications, like your video and audio players, are looking for an alsa driver. when your comp is running oss.
just a thought.
sorry, man.

regards

im not really familier with RH but i think ALSA (advanced linux sound architecture) is pretty common, and the ALSA-Mixer (bash: amixer) is set to mute by default, in bash, type "amixer" then "m" to unmute the various channels, easily navigated by the "left" and "right" keys on the keyboard. "up" and "down" keys raise or lower the volume on the selected channel. when your done, hit "escape", then type "alsactl store 0" so that in the future you can type "alsactl restore 0" so you dont have to screw with the volume manually anymore. I reccomend putting this in a startup script somewhere. "initab" maybe? i cant remember what RH was. In slack it would go in the /etc/rc.d/rc.* file.
