sound blaster no sound tested ok on 2nd pc

Not sure if motherboard is reason sound blaster not making sound. Card works ok in other pc. Tested with known good live linux game cd. Game cd works on other pc. Both card and cd test good.
Sony vaio 44g pcv-rz

Turned off on board ac97 in bios
Turned on o/s plug and play detection in bios

I can hear hissing in speakers during periods when I know I should be hearing sound, then hissing sound diminishes to base line hiss so I know that the sound card is responding to software commands to produce sound. I see no hardware error. Not sure what else to check. I suspect motherboard because bios reports on boot that chasis fan not working. I tested fan, works fine when I connect to pc power supply directly using an unused plug.

I'm guessing this is with OpenSuse.
Are you sure it's not muted?, perhaps a GUI mixer is available to check. I don't know anything about OpenSuse, but I do have the same sound card on an old desktop from 2005 which uses same driver and kernel module and always worked with any Linux I installed.
But... it used to make that hissing sound all the time even when not expecting sound, and it would change to same baseline hiss, did the same thing in Windows. Your post makes me laugh knowing it's just the nature of that beast. I eventually bought Asus USB speakers and made them the default for some peace and quiet.
EDIT: But I don't recall a need to disable the onboard ac97, I believe a sound device in a pci slot becomes default.
