sound blaster live 24-bit not recognized by ubuntu hoary hedgehog

I've just done a clean install of ubuntu hoary hedgehog (4.05) and the creative sound blaster live! 24bit sound card isn't detected.

no mixer shows up in the gnome pannel, esd is not running, and if I try to manualy start it, I get
/dev/dsp: no such file or directory

I've just updated everything on the system, what should i try next? do i need to download a specific driver?
