Sound Blaster Live 24-bit detected, but device not found
 

Hey everybody

I've got FC2 running with kernel 2.6.8-1.521. My sound card is Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit (the one that is audigyls, not emu10k1) and I disabled the onboard soundcard in BIOS. I've tried everything to get this card up and running on my system, but i cant get any sound to come out. I installed the latest ALSA 1.0.6a and compiled the modules just like it says on their install guide. Now my system says it does detect the card, if i run the soundcard detection program it will show up as an Audigy LS, but no test file plays. However, anytime i try to start a mixer or anything like testing aplay wav it comes back with "alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device." sndconfig doesnt want to work because soundcore is .ko not .o

since i cant get to alsamixer or anything, i cant try to unmute the sounds if i could even get that far. (i even tried to compile 2.6.9 with ALSA embedded but it gave me a kernel panic so im scared to try that again). At one point it tried to configure the card on boot-up but it didnt seem to emable sound.

I know this seems like many of the other problem posts but 1) snd_audigyls is installed not emu10k1 and 2) i can't even get a mixer program to run to unmute anything. Please hellp my newbness :). I have a nasty feeling i ruined something beyond repair and need to start fresh? If i do how do i do that?

and finally KDE info center says:

There is no AC97 codec on Live 24-bit. ADC is WM8775. The DAC is also different, it's actually the same as on Audigy2 ZS, CS4382-KO. We actually need a new drivers which are part of audigyls (the PCI controller), part of audigy 2 (teh CS4382) and a new ADC implementation is needed.

As the card is a Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24bit take a look at:

It would appear that they have changed the chipset lets see if we can get a new driver under way.

"I have managed to get this card working in Linux alsa now.
Code will be posted next weekend, if I have time."

i've given up on my on-board sis 7012 sound chip,
and have been trying to get the sound blaster live 24
to work in suse 9.2. i've had no luck.
i saw your post the other day, and see that there might be some hope with
that new driver.

If you go to:
http://www.alsa-project.org/~james/alsa-driver/audigy2/
you will find a diff file to patch the alsa driver sources.
You then have to build the drivers and apply them to your system.
I have not yet managed that build for my system, SuSE9.1, but I have managed to get started.

Same thing I have... darn, i once had it on and it worked (the guy that wrote the driver wrote me a little preview of it)

I have the EXACT same problem..except i'm using SuSE 9.2 Pro and i'm much more of a newb than you are :P alsamixer told me the same thing.. and I can't play any sounds AT ALL... though suseplugger tells me that the device is installing and that snd-audigyls is running..

I don't even know where to START to build drivers for my system or anything.. *sigh*... $40 for that card down the drain.. i bought it to be more compatible with Linux, but just my luck, it happens to be one of the Sound Blasters that won't run on Linux yet >_>

Why don't you ask from James? Anyway, I guess he will put the diff's onto his web site when the patches are ready. The live 24-bit card does have only the P17 chip, no EMU10kx at all, it's got the same DAC as Audigy2, but different ADC. It may be that making the recording part to work takes some time. So post your question to alsa-developers mailing list, I'm quite sure James will monitor that list.

From my experience you'd be better off taking anything that uses the audigyls module back to the shop and getting a SBlive! (non 24-bit) instead.
The emu10k1 based boards run just sooo sweet.

The 64 bit version is all they are selling now on the low end. There goes our low end sound card of choice. Make sure you send an email to Creative labs.

well i gave up on my sound blaster live 24 card.
brought it back to my favorite store best buy.
went online and found a sound blastwer live value card,
installed it, reinstalled suse 9.2, and low and behold
i have sound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i use to have the problem

i installed alsa (apt-get install alsa) debian dist

alsa config

do the setup

run the volume control/mixer

then try to run audacity to see if you got it workin
