Exclamation Sound and modem problems under RH 7.3

Hi,I'm pretty new to Linux since I've only been messing with it for a couple of months.I have RH installed on both my tower and on a Compaq Presario 700 laptop.
Everything seems to work fine in the laptop except the sound card(not getting any sound),the winmodem(a Conexant HSFi V.92),and partially the DVD-ROM.
I'm triple booting W2k,WinXP Pro and RH 7.3;RH is installed in /dev/hda3 and I use Lilo as the boot manager. The problem with the sound card is that, when doing an sndconfig it seems to go through it ok,but then it gets to the part where it is supposed to play a sample sound but no sound comes out even though it doesn't give an error message,it just goes through the whole thing as if everything was ok.
As far as the DVD-ROM,it only reads data CDs;whenever I put a music CD in the drive and I try to open it,it gives me a error message about it being unable to mount the disk because of it being the wrong file system_by the way this doesn't happen in my other setup.I don't know the brand and model of the DVD drive, only that it is the drive that came with the laptop though I'm sure I can look that up.
The modem...it seems to work after I downloaded the .rpm but when I try to connect using Kppp,it seems to connect because it goes through the login and authentication process but neither Konqueror or Mozilla can open any pages, though they work just fine when I connect using my DSL with Earthlink;it is only when I try to connect using the modem that there is a problem.By the way,the modem is supposed to be accesible under ttySHSF0 but under Kppp I don't see it listed as an option to choose from when setting up the account;this may be a clue.
I know it is a lot of stuff in one post but I would really appreciate some help since I really want to ditch winblows.
Thanks a lot in advance!
