Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Angry Sound

Hi, I total noob here. I have Fedore Core 2. Everything is working perfectly but my sound. My CD player works great but my systems sounds come out as a buzz.

here is my system:

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [KM400] Chipset Host Bridge
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8237 PCI Bridge
00:10.0 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 80)
00:10.1 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 80)
00:10.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 80)
00:10.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 82)
00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8235 ISA Bridge
00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 74)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome] Integrated Video (rev 01)

When I do a sound card detection I get Via VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller Module snd-via 82xx.

Since my Card is a VT1612 2 channel its being detecting wrong.
How do I find the driver and install it?

Thanks!

what did you use to detect the sound card?
if not system-config-soundcard then you can apt-get it.

A LOT of people have had problems with this combo with the newer ALSA releases (VIA 82xx onboard sound, snd-via82xx module), including myself. At least for me, KMix held the answer. There are some extra sliders on the right side that need to be moved up to get PCM audio. Also, if you are using line-in and mic inputs as inputs and not as the extra outputs, go into the "advanced" section and disable the "line-in as surround" and "mic-in as center/LFE". If this fixes it, you will need to save the settings in the Control Center. It also would help to open a terminal window, su root, and run "alsactl store" so the settings will load on boot.

Hope this helps.

It's been awhile, (I have a new computer/new soundcard now) but yeah.. sliding up certain volume things in KMIX/alsamixer fixed this for me, if I remember correctly.

Maybe run a Google search about this.
