Question Sony Internal DVD w/DMA?

Hello, patient ones...
Does anybody know why a Sony internal DVD-ROM model DDU1611 rejects the command 'hdparm -d1 /dev/hdd', run as root, with the message, "operation not permitted'? There appears to be no obvious reason why it shouldn't allow itself to be put into DMA mode, so as to enhance DVD playback a bit. I've tried the command with the drive mounted and unmounted, and with a disk in it and with it empty. Same results... Sony online info sucks...

My newbie-ish system:
AMD Athlon XP 1700+ 512K RAM
2 hard drives on IDE channel 1
CD-RW as master on IDE channel 2, and DVD-ROM as slave
SuSE 8.0 Pro

Thank you,
Myo
