Exclamation Sony Handycam DCR-TRV460 doesn't work on Kernel 4.3

I have a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV460 which under 32bit Windows XP (alone - Sony doesn't support any other platform at all) supports USB streaming. From what I have been able to determine, after exhaustively Googling, there used to be a Linux Kernel with a driver module that supported this, a very long time ago, but nobody knows what version (probably 2.6 series, maybe even earlier - documentation is sketchy at best). I contacted Sony directly and their solution was to either use a computer with XP, buy a new camera, or get a tape drive with the appropriate software, if I wanted to do this myself.

Currently, I'm running 4.3.0 (generic, from the Ubuntu Kernel team) on Ubuntu 15.04 x64, but it doesn't support this camera model. Is there a way to search previous kernel releases for the specific driver module I need to be able to use this Sony dinosaur and recompile it back in with the 4.3.0 source?

In my favour so far is the fact that I already use VLC to play movies and DVDs on Linux, and when combined with a little back-end manoeuvring from the video4linux project, it's theoretically possible to do this natively on Linux, but only if I can get the proper kernel support for the Handycam.

I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for something I could do myself for free (especially as I am between contracts currently and money is tight), though I suppose I could try running XP in a virtual machine, but I don't have an XP CD as I haven't used XP since mid-2005. I have tried to use this under WINE, but nothing works at all (the device isn't even seen by Windows apps), and I don't have 1394 (firewire) support on my computer, so it's USB 2.0 or bust.

So... Is it possible to incorporate driver modules from retired kernels to bring back hardware support for dropped devices into a newer kernel? If so, how? If not, am I up the proverbial creek? My goal is to be able to convert my old Hi8 tapes to digital format (like my wedding video), and the easiest way is to simply stream the content of the tapes over USB through a software capture medium, such as VLC,then burn the media files to DVD.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to use the camera for live streaming too so the kids can Skype with their Grandparents who live many hours away in a different city, but so far, all attempts have failed to get any software to see this camera.

Buy this XP CD with SP2 ($16), or a similar one with a valid product key, install VirtualBox in your Ubuntu machine, then install XP in VirtualBox:

You could also make an offer on it.

SP3 is available here if you need it:

Alternatively, there is this one with SP3 included:

Also have a look at this suggestion by Skoop:

OK. Turns out I did have an old XP CD in storage, so I installed it on an Oracle VM as suggested. But the VM doesn't recognize the camera because the host doesn't. On Ubuntu, I can use the microphone for audio input, but I can't access the video stream, and I don't have 1394 on my desktop.

I've attached several screenshots to illustrate.

Is there a better way to do this, or am I up the proverbial creek?

I really thought a lot about the above posting. At first I was going to just delete the post but then I feel it should be up to the LQ member whether to download the ISO or ignore. One the ISO has been modified;

Moreover, every new Window XP Ultimate Royale is an effective and straightforward arrival of Windows XP with all the colossal changes and enhancement, it essentially focusses on Stability and the security along with performance. Additionally, it is light on the system assets and does not influence the performance of your PC. Indeed, even power clients can utilize this working framework to deal with all the PC tasks effectively. This update is a change of Windows XP Ultimate Service Pack 3. There are the number of changes and enhancement in this version such as virtual hard disk (VHD) support in Virtual PC as well as the remote desktop feature. Also, this version includes Internet Explorer 8 and many other features.
Any modification could be a issue for the installer that could cause security issues for that user. Not something I would do with an unknown source or trusted for that matter.

Security is important and you should trust the source so I do not recommend the use of this download site unless you know for sure it can be trusted.

USB connectivity is tough with certain cameras. I think development stopped on the driver for your camera. Also, the host doesn't need to recognize the camera in order for the VM to recognize it. But you probably need software for the XP VM.

And, if you want to do live streaming, any camera will work!

[Note: Don't use any cracked software aka warez! This is highly dangerous and mostly illegal. Think about your computer becomes a botnet member using warez and provides porn or bomb building instructions via this botnet.]

[Note: Your C2Q based computer shoud provide PCI slots. This enables use of currently cheap PCI cards.]

If you want use the DCR-TRV460 as "digital video source" you need a driver independent of USB 2.0 or IEEE1394a connection to your computer. An IEEE1394a connection may give better video quality due to an implemented USB limitation in the DCR-TRV460. An old PCI IEEE1394a card should work. Linux supports IEEE1394 since kernel 2.6.

Try some live Linux versions to check whether a driver for Sony DCR-TRV460 exists. Do first try with a live Linux with a recent kernel 6.x. If this fails try with a live Linux with a kernel 2.6x.

If you can't get any driver for Sony DCR-TRV460 you can use it as "analogue video source" via S-Video connection. Unfortunately, you need an "Audio & Video grabber" to convert analogue AV to digital AV. Both USB and PCI solutions are very cheap, but check for proper Linux support before buying one. You can use a PCI card for this job. Because modern mainboards doesn't provide PCI slots you may get such a card for free or shipping costs only.

Connect the DCR-TRV460 via USB with your computer. Look at output of lsusb. If you get vendor_id:product_id for the DCR-TRV460 check for a Linux kernel driver at https://linux-hardware.org/.
