socket 370 Dedicated torrent download/upload system
 

Hello People,

I have a computer, for which I cannot find anything else to do then do some torrent upload/download (mainly Linux Distributions).

The little system is very slim on specs, it is powered by a Intel Celeron 1300Mhz (socket 370), with 128mb memory. The good part is that I successfully tested the little system with a WD 250GB PATA hard drive, the system has a 10/100mb Ethernet controller on the motherboard.

The questions I have are, which Linux distribution do I need to run on a little system (I plan to do remote control it), how do I control it remotely, and which torrent software can somebody advice... ????

Basically I want to turn the little computer in something as you see with these smart linux based NAS systems that can download and upload torrents...

i would recommend that you use, Debian Lenny
install only base system and "transmission" as torrent software.

So you can access it via ssh or if you need more install vncserver as well on the 128MB system and a little x enviroment like xfce.

A step by step guide is not what I will give you.

I've been using headless PII PC for ages with FreeBSD (now there is CentOS without X server) and excellent text based rtorrent client. Connecting through ssh and have my downloads shared over NFS / Samba... That works perfectly!

You won't need 'X' with a desktop environment. You can use ssh to remotely access the machine even if you want to export a 'X' session.

Several good 'GNU/Linux' to utilize on a small footprint machine. For older units I prefer 'Slackware® Home'.
If you just want a 'NAS' then try 'FreeNAS'. Even though 'BSD' based it will meet your needs for a 'NAS'.
