sndconfig can't open /dev/audio

I'm sorry that this issue has probably already been addressed in another post but every post I've read has a similar problem but none of the solutions work for me. I'm running a Mandrake 10.1 box with a SoundBlaster 16 card and a cs4323 sound card on the mother board. But every time I run sndconfig I get "can't open /dev/audio" when it trys to to the Linus sound clip thing. If I run alsaconf it detects both cards when it searches for cards but the system hangs on "loading volume settings" and freezes. I've tried just about everything I've seen in numerous forums, but nothing works. I'm fairly new to Linux so I would appreciate detailed help. Thanks in advance.

well, 1st thing to check is if /dev/audio exists.

open a command prompt (terminal). Type "ls -l /dev/audio"

that said i think mandrake might use it's own device names etc......

maybe this is pertinent:

what type of card it is (deatailed???)

Nope /dev/audio doesn't exist. Neither does dsp, or mixer. Now what?

[root@Fisher fisher]# ls -l /dev/audio
ls: /dev/audio: No such file or directory
[root@Fisher fisher]# ls -l /dev/dsp
ls: /dev/dsp: No such file or directory
[root@Fisher fisher]# ls -l /dev/mixer
ls: /dev/mixer: No such file or directory

The onboard soundcard has always given me problems in Linux and when I searched the IBM site for specs on my box I ended up finding This page with specs for my sound card. As far as I can tell though it's a crystal audio sound card and it uses the cs432x driver in linux, or at least that's what's been detected by my box.

I also have a soundblaster 16 WavEffects card installed right now, Here's the soundblaster page for my card. Just scroll down to the part with the model number ct4170.

Well crap. I've spent the past three days googling. And it should work, I mean, it's supported by linux and stuff. Oh well, I'll continue being googles favorite user...
