Smp compatibility with Gigabyte mobo FC5, Centos
Hi, I'm interested in building a new system based on an AMD x2 5400 and a Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 motherboard and 2 or so gig of ram. I plan to upgrade my previous dual cpu system running 2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp and plan to use it again and or CentOs 4.4. I have read to bits, trying to find information on compatibility issues. I gave up on Asus after reading an article whcih confirmed they "weren't interested" in open source hardware issues for Linux so I found that Gigabyte does. Check out this interesting story if you like :) "pardon to the author for lifting this link" http://news.softpedia.com/news/First...OS-47991.shtml And I am hoping rather than throwing in the towel and check to see if anybody knows a liddle more. I am trying to find out if the motherboard of my desires ..or wallet will run out of the box and any issues i might have before I start.. I realize it might be a lofty ask.. but :) My main work is home hobby video/telecine dvd's etc. and small time slide processing anybody out there willing to help :) Thank you in advance :) regards albert shoulda went to thebeach |
As I and several other lq members have said nothing will quite run straight out of the box under linux. I had to do about three hours worth of fiddling last saturday to get debian to work with my dell 2005FPW Flat Panel Monitorm just to give you an idea of the learning curve involved with linux.

Cheers :) I'll give it a go ...
