Smokin' monitors!
I recently bought a computer and monitor just to install Linux on, to keep separate from that other OS. They sent a bad monitor, so I installed with monitor on my other computer which is a 19". The monitor and its replacement were 17". I think I smoked the second monitor they sent due to using the wrong resolution. How do I reset the resolution before putting the system with new monitor, so I don't smoke it too?

rm /etc/X11/XF86Config*
xf86config |
XFree86-4.x.x polls the monitor directly and if a specified resolution is not supported by the hardware it defaults to the highest supported resolution in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. If you use XFree86.3.x.x you need to specify your monitor specs, see the video timing How-To for a complete explanation. I think you just had a faulty monitor.
