I have purchased a SMC 2870W wireless bridge, planning to connect to another PC which has an internet connection. This one also has a wireless network-card. Therefore, I hope there will be no problems connecting to this (Windows)PC. Anyway, I'm running FC2 and as Linux is not mentioned in the manual, I wonder wether I need a driver? On the SMC homepage there are no drivers for the Linux2.6.x for this product. Is it plug'n play/pray? Nothing happens as I attach the bridge to my computer...

If I'm not mistooken, you said that your Linux box has a regular network card, you have a machine with an internet connection and no network card, and you just bought a wireless access point (bridge).

Is this correct?

My computer:
linux, regular network card, smc 2870w bridge

internet computer:
windows, wireless network adap, broadband router

i want to "network myself" into the internet computer. have not tried this yet, as it seems like linux can't "feel" my bridge. therefore, i wonder: do i need a driver, and where can i get it?

Ok, so (someone correct me if I'm wrong) you don't need a driver for the wireless bridge as it connects to a repeater/switch that you need to buy.

The windows pc is probably plugged into the router (giving it internet). If this is the case, you need to:

1) buy the switch

2) plug the wireless repeater into it

3) swap the network cards

4) plug the windows machine into the new switch and configure the network settings (giving you a "wireless path" to that internet connected machine)

5) setup the linux box to use it's wireless adapter

6) enable internect connection sharing on the windows box (it then acts as a router for you)

7) successfully join the linux box to your wireless access point's "site"

8) configure the linux box to use your windows pc as it's "default gateway"

This is a lot of work, no? But as far as I know, it's the only way. By the way, yes I have left out a few details but am willing to assist with more information if and when your ready to proceed.
