No, but I have to say I don't understand your boss. SCSI RAID and the associated hard drives are mucho more expensive. But, maybe it'll be an eye opener for him. So, yea... SCSI good.
For that kernel I would recommend the PATA 3ware controller and IDE PATA drives if you are on a budget. If you want a real server, you can get a SCSI card with 10,000/15,000 RPM SCSI drives. SCSI is a better architecture than PATA. Only SATA can begin to touch it performance-wise.
And I saw your post about the adaptec card. A simple way to find out what card to get is to look in the kernel. ftp.kernel.org. Download the 2.4.19 kernel source. tar-zxpvf *.gz. make xconfig. Look at the SCSI drivers and those are the cards that will work natively. Good luck.
