Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question Slow On-board LAN

I am using a Linux box running SuSe 8.0 as an FTP server. It has an Asrock Mobo with an onboard 10/100 LAN using the Via chipset.

I get very poor performance when "get"ting files from the LAN. eg 100Mb file took 8 hours. The "put" process for the same file took around 15 minutes.

When I disabled the onboard LAN and installed a old 10Mb LAN card using the Realtek chipset. The "get" performance improved dramatically; it took around 10 minutes.

I have also experienced the same thing with a PC-Chips Mobo, also with an onboard Via 10/100 LAN.

My own theory is some sort of buffering problem. Has any-one got any other explanations?

TIA - Keith
