Slow IDE disk...

My IDE devices were running extremely slow. I especially noticed this when I burned a CD, and my CPU usage went to 100%. After googling the problem, I found that DMA needed to be enabled for each device. Unfortuneatley, I did not have DMA support enabled in my kernel, so I then compiled a new kernel. Now, I have DMA enabled, but after any access to the disk, my system locks up for about 40 seconds. Anyone know what this might be happening? I don't know if matters but I have the IDE disk mounted as NTFS.

Here is some info on my system...

dmesg | grep IDE
Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00beta4-2.4
VP_IDE: IDE controller at PCI slot 00:07.1
VP_IDE: chipset revision 6
VP_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
VP_IDE: VIA vt82c686b (rev 40) IDE UDMA100 controller on pci00:07.

# hdparm /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 8 (on)
geometry = 15017/255/63, sectors = 241254720, start = 0

Hi.. I believe I have fixed this problem. I guess forcing the disk to use UDMA66 works.

hdparm -X66 /dev/hda
