Slow FPS full screen FC5 using Nvidia GeForce MMX 400

Hi

I am new to Linux but enjoying using it and would like to move completely to it eventually, but I am suffering some graphics issues. I recently downloaded Flight gear flight sim and in a window it runs fine around 30 FPS when I switch to full screen however, it goes down to 1 FPS. I am running a Sempron 2600+ with 512 mb DDR ram and an Nvidia Geforce MMX 400 graphics card with 64 mb of ram. when I run glxgears I am getting;

3596 frames in 5.0 seconds = 719.092 FPS
3724 frames in 5.0 seconds = 744.729 FPS
3727 frames in 5.0 seconds = 745.378 FPS
1743 frames in 5.0 seconds = 348.164 FPS (To full screen)
509 frames in 5.0 seconds = 101.652 FPS
509 frames in 5.0 seconds = 101.624 FPS
509 frames in 5.0 seconds = 101.624 FPS

as you can see a significant drop in FPS when I switch to full screen mode. As you request in your introduction email I have included the info Below:

The numbers look about right to me.

When you go "fullscreen" is the game changing your screen resolution, or are you maximizing the window? In one case, the game will continue to use it's small screen for speed (your screen resolution will be switched to, for example, 640x480), in the other case, you are attempting to run the game at your current desktop resolution (for example 1280x1024), which will be much slower.

Thanks for such a quick reply.

I am maximizing the window. I take it now I need to set the resolution in the game to play full screen but at a lower resolution.

Thanks

Hi again

I've just tried the game instruction which says use command line:

$ FGFS --enable-game-mode to make it full screen

This is the message in the terminal window:

$ fgfs --enable-game-mode
freeglut (fgfs): failed to change screen settings
freeglut (fgfs): ERROR: Function <glutPostRedisplay> called with no current window defined.
freeglut ERROR: Function <glutSetCursor> called without first calling 'glutInit'.

Thanks

Take a look at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Your 'Screen' section should have a display subsection that lists the various modes. For example:

Code:
Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    Option "SWcursor" "True"
    Option "HWcursor" "False"
    Option "UseEdidFreqs" "True"
# Option "RenderAccel" "True"
# Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck;NoEdidMaxPClkCheck"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection
Make sure that there is a list of valid resolutions, not just a single entry. If you change the file, you will need to log off and restart X windows (ctrl-alt-backspace), then log back in.
