slow CD ripping with Pioneer DVR-K16RA laptop drive

Hi all,

I am getting truly GLACIAL ripping speeds -- upwards of two hours per disk -- on my Acer laptop with a Pioneer DVR-K16RA drive. Grip typically displays a ripping speed of 0.5x, painfully slow. On my desktop box, I typically saw ripping speeds of 3-4x. I realize a slimline laptop drive is liable to be a little slower than desktop drive, but still...

Yes, DMA is on.

I have tried disabling paranoia, switching to cdda2wav, ripping on the command line without being able to determine the cause of the bottleneck.

There are a dozen or so threads in the LQ message archive regarding this issue but none seems to indicate an obvious solution. Is this drive just a slow turkey?
