[Solved..?] Slackware + USB Audio (JVC NX-PS1)

I got a JVC NX-PS1 for Christmas. As my old computer speakers weren't as neat, I quickly replaced them (as in, as soon as I got home).

Tested with my iPod, sounds nice. I also tried to listen to music in Windows with success. However, I can't hear any sound in Linux. Not really unexpected, so... Google to the rescue!

I found some guides, such as this one. Recompile the kernel? Sounds too painful to a slacker like me. Maybe I finally have to face it and learn how to do it.

Or maybe not! That's why I posted this thread. I suspect that I've just missed a small detail, probably involving ALSA (wouldn't be the first time. Muted channels in alsamixer, anyone?) This time I'll be smart and ask those smarter and more experienced before I start destroying my computer.

So. I'm using Slackware 12.0 with the default kernel. I don't know what's more is relevant;

hans@localhost:~$ cat /proc/asound/modules
 0 snd_emu10k1
 1 snd_usb_audio
hans@localhost:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards

If there's anything more you want to know, please tell me.

EDIT1: By the way, I can see "USB Audio DAC" as a mixer in KMix. There's only one channel: PCM.

EDIT2: Yes I do use KDE (3.5.7). Is there anything I should change in the Control Center? Apparently I can't get sound as root either.

OK. So I played around a little bit (didn't really change anything, did I? ...) and rebooted again (for a different reason). Voila! Suddenly everything works.

Now my only annoyance is with KMix, as the master channel of my SB Live 5.1 is still the default channel (I change it when I scroll the KMix icon). Anyone know if it's possible to change to the PCM channel of USB Audio DAC?
