Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Slackware 9 Promise Ultra 100 Won't Boot

Hello,

I have installed Slack 9 on my system which has the following:

Built in VIA ide:
45G IBM Drive Channel 1Master root=/dev/hda2
DVD+RW Channel 2 Master

Promise Ultra 100:
80G IBM Drive Channel 1 Master
80G IBM Drive Channel 1 Slave

40G IBM Drive Channel 2 Master
40G IBM Drive Channel 2 Slave

I can boot the system from the using the bare.i kernel but when I try booting from the hard drive using bare.i it gets to recognizing the 40G drives on the Promise controller and freezes. Here's a dmesg snippet:

Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 6.31
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
VP_IDE: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
VP_IDE: chipset revision 6
VP_IDE: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
VP_IDE: VIA vt82c686b (rev 40) IDE UDMA100 controller on pci00:07.1
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xc000-0xc007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xc008-0xc00f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio
PDC20267: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 48
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 00:09.0
PDC20267: chipset revision 2
PDC20267: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
PDC20267: (U)DMA Burst Bit ENABLED Primary PCI Mode Secondary PCI Mode.
ide2: BM-DMA at 0xdc00-0xdc07, BIOS settings: hde:pio, hdf:pio
ide3: BM-DMA at 0xdc08-0xdc0f, BIOS settings: hdg:pio, hdh:pio

After disconnecting the 40G drives the system boots from the hard drive fine. How come? I have WinXP installed on /dev/hda1 and the 40G drives run fine there, so I don't think the drives themselves have any problems...

Thanks,

Jason

What happens if you leave the 40GB pair on and remove the 80GB pair?
