SlackWare 9.1 kernel 2.4.22 si HDD S-ATA

Hy ...I'm new here ...

I have a big problem ... maybe it's big just for me.

It's the first time I wanted to install SlackWare ....
Until now as Linux I understood RH ... the last version used was 8.0

I have a new hardware and wanted to install SlackWare 9.1 but I have a S-ATA HDD, which isn't detected by the def. kernel 2.4.22 ....
What I'm asking here is if I can update the kernel on the install CD1 of SlackWare .... and how it is done. I would like the whole steps pls ... and links for download.
And if possible ... some changes I have to do to the .config for my system ..

I have 2x512MB ... and a Hercules AIW ATI Radeon 9800SE.

P.S. sorry for the language but english isn't my base language ...
P.P.S. I don't have a spare IDE HDD; if I boot from FDD or Boot-able CD in pure MS-DOS I can see one partition on my HDD which is FAT32.

Yah... you can kinda do that, it depends on how far you are willing to go

One of the install stages of Slackware asks you how you want to install a kernel. You can either choose on of their defaults or install your own from somewhere else.

-->One option is to make the 2.6 kernel on your system and then burn it to CD
-->Another option is to download the 9.1 slackware distro and replace the 2.4 kernel with the 2.6 kernel

** to do this one you will want to do something like
wget -r ftp://ftp.cerias.purdue.edu/pub/os/s...slackware-9.1/
in a new directory (once it is all downloaded, go into the /kernels directory and replace 'em)

Thanks dretay ....

But what you told me I knew already ... to replace the 2.4.x kernel with 2.6.x ... but I can't do that because I don't have a compiled 2.6.x kernel ... all I could find on the web was the sources for it ... which I can't compile because I have no Linux on my machine.
I also found on the web a sata.i kernel but is for Silicon processor not for the Promise one.

Hmmm.....promise SATA.......
You'll need to build your own boot floppy, such as was done to make the sata.i floppy you found, there is a kernel patch for the promise controller here.

O.K. Aussie ... And how do I do that ... the update of the kernel on the floopy ? .. I made a Bot Floppy from the install CD1 of Slackware, I copied the update file on it (but firs I decompressed it) ...
Now I'm supposed to boot from FDD and update the kernel ... But how ?

I was having the same problem as you. I couldn't get Slackware install to detect my S-ATA HD either. I just had to go into my BIOS and go to my IDE Configuration and change my Onboard IDE Operate Mode from Enhanced Mode to Compatible Mode. Everything works find for me now.

I'm using a Promise Controller, not an Silicon Image one .. so I don't have that option ...
