Question Slackware 8.1 Via Sound Problems

Hello. I'm a n00b in linux. I have slack 8.1 on a Shuttle motherboard: Via KT266A VT 8366-8233. I have sound on board. I had compiled my kernel with Via Chip-set Support (BTW i have kernel 2.4.18) and VIA 82C686 Audio Codec as a module and VIA 82C686 MIDI integrated. I had modify the rc.modules and every thing goes ok. I passed the /dev/dsp (no such device) problem. But still no sound. When i run xmms, even as a root, it blocks. The mplayer has no audio output. It runs the movie but with no sound.
When i: lsmod the output is:
via82cxxx_audio 18080 2
ac97_codec 9568 0 [via82cxxx_audio]
soundcore 3236 2 [via82cxxx_audio]
i tryed to /sbin/module via82cxxx_audio irq=5 coz i did a lspci and i find out the irq. i even changed the mod of /dev/dsp to 666 and after to 777 and nothing same "black sound". The sound works perfectly in Windows and on my other box were i have a Epox motherboard the sound works perfectly. I don't know what to do any more. I even Thoth to download some new drivers but i don't know from were so please help me with this problem.

Hi! And Welcome to LQ

I have the same soundcard in my mobo in my truck. The reason I didn't reply is because you appear to have done everything I did to make it work, only mine did work.

There are other options out there, ALSA has a driver for this card. If you want to try that www.alsa-project.org This also works fine with my card, I followed the directions pretty much exactly as they are shown on the how-to for this card. Here's the exact link:
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...module=via82xx

Good Luck, and let me know how that goes

Cool

One question(sorry for using your thread to do this). How did you pass the /dev/dsp(no such device) problem? Thanks in advance!

Shuttle AK31 version 3

So are the Shuttle motherboards a good choice for Linux boxes? There seems to be quite a few threads on LQ about problems with AC97 drivers.

I just tested the box I just built in Win98... now I plan to rebuild it with Slackware 8.1... Ahh... my first Slackware install...

Oh one other question... my slack box is going to end up just being an Apache server with PHP, MySQL, qMail and probably PureFTP...

Is an old Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 with 4MB video card going to be sufficient to run Slackware with X enabled, probably use FluxBox for windows manager?

That video card is dog slow in Win98 with an Athlon 1.8GHZ...
