Slackware 10 / Sata / Kernel
 

Hi to you all, i hope you can really help me because i really want SLACK on my SATA Hard drive:


I have read this topic:

I can't post URL...damn.....

and i have downloaded the SLACK Sata CD1 iso that bonecrusher from the topic above have hosted in his site...so far so good :)

Then i have boot from this modified CD and boot with: sata.i

My maxtor diamond 9 was recognized and i have used: cfdisk /dev/sda

and formated my drive with / and swap partition....then install all the packages and change for the second cd.


That's when the problems start, i know i can't use the original kernel that comes with slack 10 (2.4.26), i know that i can't use any of the others that come on the cd as well (adaptec, scsi....)....i know that i have to use the option bootdisk....

MY PROBLEM, HOW CAN I MADE THAT BOOTDISK, SO MY KERNEL DON'T PANIC LIKE IS DOING RIGHT NOW.....

Can anyone please tell me how to do this floppy, i have heard that i have to download the right rawrite....
Please a quick tutorial on this.... can i make this floppy on windows?

My board: ASUS A7V600
My Serial ATA Chipset: VIA VT8237
My SATA Drive : Maxtor Diamond 9 Plus

If I'm reading you correctly, the problem is that for some reason
his CD defaults to the sata.i kernel, but when you get to the part
of the installation where you actually install a kernel, if you choose
"Skip this menu (use the default /boot/vmlinuz)" it installes the bare.i
kernel rather that the sata.i kernel. I had the same problem. Do this:

When the install asks which kernel to install, choose:
"Use a kernel from the Slackware CD"
which defaulted to /cdrom/kernels/sata.i/bzImage

NB: You must install bonecrusher's sata.i kernel for it to boot. After
many tries, I just reinstalled and did what I've just told you and it now
boots fine. I'm using it to post right now. And now I'm trying to get
the 2.6.7 kernel to boot - that's another problem...

I have tried what you have told me but with no success:

a) i boot from the CD1 (modified cd with sata.i from bonecrusher), drive recognized, partition, format and install the selected packages

b) In the middle of the install i have to change for the CD2 (original one that i have downloaded from Slack site) and the install of the packages continue, then as you said above it appears "use one of the kernels on slackware CD" but when i press it appears a lot of kernels (adaptec, scsi, ataraid...) but no sata.i, i think, yeah i'm using the 2nd original cd...so it won't have sata.i, i have tried to eject to put cd1 but with no sucess..........so in the end Kernel Panic.

I will copy the sata.i kernel on the bonecrusher cd to one floppy and hope to use it in bootdisk option , instead of use slackware kernels on the cd or default kernel...

You did something wrong at the "select a kernel step." It is on the
CD you burned from bonecrusher's site, so if you have CD2 in the
drive, don't select anything on your screen until you eject that CD2
and then put CD1 (bonecrusher's) into the drive. Then select ->
"Use a kernel from the Slackware CD"
which defaulted to /cdrom/kernels/sata.i/bzImage

I know you think you did it this way, but I don't think you did...

I was able to boot from Slackware 10 (i use bootdisk option, and then put my SATA.I Floppy)....but then i have to upgrade on kernel 2.6....and as you said that is another big story...

If it's any help, I upgraded from his 2.4.26 sata.i kernel to the
2.6.7 kernel - no problem. I've even recompiled it a couple
of times. The latest was today to use the ALSA drivers that
are in the /slackware/testing directory and I selected my
sound driver in the kernel. All works well. Glad you got
the sata drive installed with Slack!
