slack 10.1 - video issue

question for you guys. I just loaded an older system up with a fresh install of Slack 10.1 and I'm having some video issues. I ran xorgconfig and inputed the correct info( or as acurate as I could find....the system planer docs are not very Linux frendly) Including H/V refresh and amount of video mem and color depth. Every time I try to start x it craps out on me with a" (EE) VGA (0) : Given depth (16) is not supported by this driver " error. If I maually edit the xorg.conf file and set the depth to 8 bit it will start but the resolution is 320 or even lower and is completly unusable. It's a Intel board with a 815e chipset and a viewsonic PS775 display. I notice no where did it ask me what the default display mode was to be either and I cannot find anywhere to tell it what default to use.

any ideas??????

edit
kernel 2.4.29 and it lists as VGA compat controller: Intel Corp. 82815 CGC rev2

Maybe you chose the incorrect driver? If I recall correctly for that chipset (integrated graphics right?) you should choose the i810 driver during the xorg config stage.

thanks for the reply..by your suggestion I reran xorgconfig and got it to work loading the i810 driver as you suggested but I can only get it to load X at 8bit color depth. It seems to be running at 1280x1024 and I want to back it down to 1024x768 but I still can figure out how to change the default mode. Do you have any suggestions?

ok, I find this howto is extremely helpful and applies to slackware just as much as gentoo:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

specifically you may want to scroll down to the section entiltitled "setting your resolution"

the problem is fixed..seems there are a few limitations to the onboard video on these boards(duh) and it will only do 1024 at 8 bit.... Thanks for everything
