Site For Linux Drivers.

Can anyone recommend a good site for Linux drivers, and what would be the best type of modem to use with a Linux O/S.
Regards, Bobby.

Which drivers? Which distribution? We all get our drivers from either the install cds or from the internet. (Using Google and/or Google Linux). For the modem, any external modem which connects via the serial port should work fine.

There's really no such thing as a driver site in linux, as drivers are developed in a totally different way. Generally speaking, 95% of most well written stable drivers for any given type of hardware is built in to the Linux Kernel itself. it's essentially what Linux IS...

The driver for the modem, which is a intel 536ep, i downloaded onto my other computer in winzip form. I then, copied it to a floppy disk hoping that my Suse 9.1 O/S would find it, no luck im afraid.
I even tried unziping it to a folder, loading it once again to the floppy and then copied it to a new folder on the Suse desktop. Still no luck. Should the Suse O/S recognise winzip. These are the instructions I was following.

6 steps to install.

1. login as ROOT

ctrl+alt+F2 (you should have a black screen with a "login prompt"

type: root <enter>

root password <enter>

2. extract the archive into a directory with "tar -zxvf <archivename>.tgz"

type: (you should see a # symbol here) tar -zxvf <your_file_name>.tgz

3. cd into the directory it created.

It will create a new directory for you at this point, cd (change directory) to that directory by

typing:cd <new_directory_name>

4. Type: make clean

type:make clean

5. Type: make 536

type:make 536

6. Type: make install

type:make install

Any ideas please. Regards, Bobby.
