SiS 7018 In debian linux

bah 2 topics in a week.. i normally dont like asking for help, i like finding it out on my own. but now i cannot find a solution....
My sound works everywhere but native games. Quake 3 says sound system is muted and Neverwinter Nights just doesnt give me any sound. i also cannot control sound in programs, it stays at a steady 100% in XMMS even if i turn it to 0%. Ill now give you the outputs of a few programs. But i do get sound in XMMS and other programs such as xine and winex.. i can run games and get sound in it with winex.
dmesg:
Code:
Trident 4DWave/SiS 7018/ALi 5451,Tvia CyberPro 5050 PCI Audio, version 0.14.10j-2.6, 17:31:37 Apr 5 2004
PCI: Found IRQ 11 for device 0000:00:01.4
trident: SiS 7018 PCI Audio found at IO 0xd800, IRQ 11
ac97_codec: AC97 codec, id: CMI65 (CMedia)
AC97 codec does not have proper volume support.
thats the sound part.

/etc/init.d/alsa restart
Code:
mikhails:/home/mikhail# /etc/init.d/alsa restart
Storing ALSA mixer settings ... failed
Shutting down ALSA (version 1.0.2c): done.
Starting ALSA (version 1.0.2c): trident-failed failed
alsactl restore (it told me to run this once)
Code:
alsactl: load_state:1134: No soundcards found...
sndconfig gives me an error while running it
Code:
You don't seem to be running a kernel with modular
sound enabled. (soundcore.o was not found in the module search path).
To use sndconfig, you must be running a kernel with modular sound, such
as the kernel images shipped with Debian Linux or a 2.2 or greater kernel.
I have compiled my kernel and made sound card support modular, im runnning 2.6.3.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'd really like to play Neverwinter Nights.. with sound.

edit: btw im running a ECS K7SEM mobo with a sis730s chipset and a SiS 7018 onboard soundcard.

edit2: alsa is started though.. it just comes up with that error.... and its just a bit frustrating

edit3: sound in chromium works too

edit4: heres what i get in alsamixer
Code:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
edit5: i also dont get any sound in mozilla.

edit6: recompiled kernel last night (it didnt fix anything but i had been forgetting make olconfig.. but it didnt help) this time i compiled trident as a kernel module while doing iand made sure sound card support was still set as a module. this is my output of cat /proc/asound/cards
Code:
--- no soundcards ---
