You just make the system unstable or in some cases freeze. Also it can corrupt the data when reading and writing. That is why the kernel developers add Seagate hard drives to a blacklist to not enable DMA in Silicon Image controllers.

IMHO, Highpoint controllers are more reliable than Silicon Image controllers.

yeah Electro, you were right..badblocks just developed on my drive..not sure if its cause of the hack, or cause of the heat...(temperatures where i live can reach 40 C)..

anyway what do you suggest is a good combination of motherboard and SATA drive (manufacturer and model number) so that it works perfectly under linux without any cheap hacks..?
