You just make the system unstable or in some cases freeze. Also it can corrupt the data when reading and writing. That is why the kernel developers add Seagate hard drives to a blacklist to not enable DMA in Silicon Image controllers.
IMHO, Highpoint controllers are more reliable than Silicon Image controllers.
