hi, i am using ubuntu 8.04, my monitor is IIYAMA: AX3835UT, requiring a frequency of 50/60Hz. Yesterday i installed a new VGA cable. my monitor worked well for like 4 hours. i switched it off and when i switched it on again it was displaying this message:
ATTENTION SIGNAL FREQUENCY IS OUT OF RANGE H: 53.5KHz V: 59.9 Hz PLEASE CHANGE SIGNAL TIMING Please assist me if you know what i need to do next because i even dont know where to start from coz am new to linux but i think it is a hardware problem, thanks in advance. |

Which linux distribution are you using and what screen resolution are you running? Your problem may well be that your system has spontaneously set a resolution at a cyclic rate that is too high for the screen specifications. For example, the documentation says 1024x768 @ 75 Hz is the optimal resolution for this screen. The screen has a given set of possible resolutions and each resolution has a cyclic rate. The screen will not accept a higher rate than the specification allows. Look in the screen manual or open the screen controls to see if the permitted resolutions are listed. You might look at your xorg.conf file to see what resolution is specified, but not all distributions have such a file. You may be able to generate such a file and then edit it for the correct resolution and cyclic rate. Have you tried to reinstall the cable, perhaps reversing the connections? Post back with more information and you might get a fuller and better response. |
i am using ubuntu 8.04, how do i check for the screen resolution, am new to this stuff

Two things to look at...
You can see what Ubuntu has set for a resolution by opening the screen configuration feature. Look around for "Screen" in your menu lists. Also try the control buttons on your Iiyama to see what resolution is being used and which resolutions are possible. |

Yes but...
The OP has several options. He might be able to install the cable he had installed, or reinstall and trouble shoot his new cable. He can try another linux distribution as a live-cd. He can see if the resolutions that the Iiyama is capable of are listed in the screen documentation or as a post in the display controls. What he is encouraged to do is to take some initiative on his own. |
thanx guys, i was able to change the screen resolution and it worked
