sigmatel MP3 player reformat for linux/ubuntu

I have a non responsive mp3 player.
555 Audio
sigmatel MSCN 2Gb

I does show up under lsusb as for example:

Bus 002 Device 028: ID 066f:3500 SigmaTel, Inc.

but it does NOT map to a device /dev/sdb1 like it use to.

I have tried to firmware update, and format under winME with the included software on CD, but it just locks up windows.
I have tried holding the PLAY or Menu button for 20 secs while plugging it in to reset it, but that produces no results.

Can I reformat the device under tux?

I use xubuntu 7.10

Looks like it's broken.

could you start
Code:
$ lshal --monitor
and post the output of that and the last lines of
Code:
$ dmesg
after you connected the player. That should tell you what went wrong, and why it doesn't show up as a device.
