Shuttle ETA Parallel port SCSI hard disk

I recently inherited and old 4GB Shuttle hard disk, which was working fine in Win98 when passed down. It connects via the parallel port.

I am having trouble setting things up in Linux, and searching the web has proved unhelpful except for one package pppSCSI, which requires full kernel rebuild to install and is likely not to work. Is there another way around the problem ?

My linux system is a harddisk install of knoppix to an internal IDE disk. It suprises me that the installer managed to detect the screwy graphics chip of my Tecra740CDT that foiled me under slackware for many hours but can't detect a parallel port disk. Am I doing something wrong ?

Sorry about the lack of disk specs, I really do not know the model number etc. I should be able to get round to photographing it and linking to the pic as soon as I can borrow a friend's digital camera.

Thanks, Tim Giffney
