Shutting Off Monitor after a specified time

I am somewhat of a newbie, but have learned quite a lot over the past month.

What I would like to do is mimic what happens in windows and on my one of my laptops.

After a certain length of time, the monitor actually shuts off.

My hardware consists of a DFI motherboard and Nvidia 6800 GT video card. The monitor is a 19" Sony LCD.

I have attempted (under KDesktop -> Display -> Power Control) to set the standby time, suspend after and power off after but nothing changes.

I did do a search on this a little while back and found something about DPMS but if I recall it just froze my screen and had to do a hard reset.

So now I would like to get this working. Any help would be appreciated.

Please run the following commands in a console and post the results :

1.grep ACPI /usr/src/linux/.config
2.grep APM /usr/src/linux/.config
