shutting down gracefully?

Hello!
When running mandrake 9 with X auto-starting on boot, the machine shuts down gracefully when I choose shutdown from the graphical login menu.

However, when I disable the X autostart option and attempt to shutdown from the command line ('shutdown now', for example) upon rebooting the machine always goes through the whole lengthy process of checking and 'repairing' all the things that apparently were missed during shutdown (suggesting I manually 'fsck', for example).

Is there an option or flag I am missing?

regards,
doug

Could you post the last few lines that are displayed before the system goes down?

You can use:

shutdown -h now

halt

or

init 0

Any of these should shut down "gracefully."
