Should I give up trying to install modem?
 

Hello all!

I'm a Linux SuSE newcomer (after 8 years with Windows) and I'm in love with it.

However, on both my desktop PC and laptop (Toshiba S3000-400), there's no way to have the modems work (internal on the desktop PC). I tried changing the ports and other configuration settings, but SuSE 8.0 doesn't even see any modems.

Am I wasting my time with, possibly, these two winmodems, and should I buy an external modem, or is there a way to have Linux see my modems?

First get the exact chip name on your modems (it envolves openning up your PC case, and in the case of laptop if it's a PCMCIA card get teh info from there), then head to http://www.linmodems.org to verify if they are indeed winmodems, so if they are and there are drivers available for linux then download the appropriate drivers and follow the instructions included with them to install the drivers. And if the budget is not an issue for you get a real hardware modem (external can be a winmodem too, so check the aforementioned website for the list of real hardware modems that work under linux), an old ISA modem with jumpers on the board is a good bet though.

The chipset says: Motorola HPi56MII and I downloaded a linux modem file for it, SM56_5.1_I386.rpm. Clicked on it, then ran setup from where it was installed, and Linux said "setup complete" etc. However, the modem setup didn't see it and running wvdialconf didn't see anything either. Am I missing something?
