setting up com port for serial connection to monitor network switch help

I have recently installed Fedora Core 2 on my Sony Vaio Laptop and I need some help getting the com port active so I can connect to a HP network switch via a serial cable to monitor/capture packets on some slow ports. The com port is built in to the laptop and I am not sure which /dev device it is associated with. Thanks for any help and let me know if more info is required.
PS. I have installed both minicom and seyon with no luck on either. They cannot find modem, but I am not trying to connect via modem.
thanks

COM1 /dev/ttyS1
COM2 /dev/ttyS2
etc.

Try those in sequence to see if you can get any response from your network switch. Make sure to check your switch docs to see which serial port settings to use (i.e. baud/parity/bits/flow-control)
