Serious graphic card issues

hey all!

first post here, but i don't know where else to turn...

for christmas, i got myself a new videocard... moved from my old Radeon 9200 and decided that i would go with a nvidia 6600GT...

so i switched the cards over, removed the radeon stuff that i had previously configured and installed nvidia-glx/nvidia-kernel (both versions 1.0.6629)... after that had finished (i'm a gentoo user, i should probably add that) i rebooted to find that my video card would not work, rather i would get a black screen that required a soft-reboot to close X (ctrl + alt + bksp).

after *a lot* of stuffing around, i still have the black screen :P

here are some of the things i have tried:

- reinstall
- xorgconfig
- harrassing #gentoo on austnet, #gentoo on freenode, ##linux on freenode, forums.gentoo.org (and many many others)
- using the nv driver (which works, but is a waste of a $400 card)
- downgrading to 6111 driver (does the same thing)
- wasting a massive amount of time, just fiddling with logs/config files.
- Disabling EDID/enabling DPMS
- recompiled xorg without dlloader and static
- tried using the vanilla nvidia drivers

and still i get the black screen. i will attach my xorg.conf and my xorg.0.log to the bottom of this message, although i could not find anything in them, and i hope you can help me!!!

i know the card works, because i put it in a borrowed windows machine to see if it could render, and it did work, so i know i'm doing something wrong.

i know this is a very long post, and i've tried to be as specific as possible (and i don't know where that glx error came from :/) anyways, hopefully someone can help me!

thanks guys!

Though written by a Suse user, would this help you or give you some clue? Otherwise, this is way beyond my level of knowledge, but I hope you are able to get your card working soon.

I think you're supposed to remove the "Load 'dri' " command in xorg. And also, (this was true of mandrake) if theres' a rivafb module running, you might want to remove it. Hope this helps. I know you've probably tried these steps.

I sympathise with your problem, having done a fair bit of "stuffing around" with the Nvidia drivers in my time. I can suggest a couple of things - firstly, try an even earlier driver, such as the 6106. This solved an annoying black screen I had with a later version.

Secondly, try different agpgart options. I built a machine for a friend last year which flatly refused to load the Nvidia driver until I'd stopped the agpgart module from loading, and instead used Nvidia's own internal agp support. From the Nvidia readme:

Option "NvAGP" "integer"
Configure AGP support. Integer argument can be one of:
0 : disable agp
1 : use NVIDIA's internal AGP support, if possible
2 : use AGPGART, if possible
3 : use any agp support (try AGPGART, then NVIDIA's AGP)
Please note that NVIDIA's internal AGP support cannot
work if AGPGART is either statically compiled into your
kernel or is built as a module, but loaded into your
kernel (some distributions load AGPGART into the kernel
at boot up). Default: 3 (the default was 1 until after
1.0-1251).

And that's about where I run out of ideas.....Hope something in this helps, anyway.

Thanks for all the responses guys/gals! i wasn't expecting so many ;)

anyway, i've tried all of the suggestions here, and all have come short :'(, i can't switch to a lesser driver though, 6629 was the first release to support nVidia 6600GT...

if anyone else has any other suggestions please voice them!!

Thanks Again guys/gals

I just checked in my Mandrake 10.1 list of drivers and it shows a driver Nvidia GeForce 6800 generic. Just thought I'd toss that out in case it's any kind of clue as to what's available.

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time with your good new card, and hope you can fix it soon.

ValidiusMaximus 01-23-2005 12:07 AM

see if knoppix can get it working then examin how it did it if it can.

shiven 01-23-2005 08:59 PM

thats the best idea i have had yet! i'm currently downloading the knoppix cd (going to take a fair while... 256k connection) but yeah, i'll test that out, and come back with my results when its done, thanks guys!

it appears my monitor died in the transition... and this other monitor works fine with it >_<

thanks for your help guys, greatly appreciated!

Oooh... R. I. P.

But are you SURE the monitor's dead? I know you've probably checked it out on another
machine and verified... But it seems like a strange coincidence to have it die right when
you're changing graphic cards.

Hope it can be saved.
