Serial Ports (tty´s)

I currently have RH 7.2 installed and wanted to enable my serial ports for communication, when I viewd my inittab file I cound not find ttyS0 ttyS1.

Are those the right ports and if so how do I install them so that they are activated on my system?

Thanking you for all input

So long as your BIOS has enabled the com ports, they will be available. There are device drivers already in place in RH7.2.

Are you having probs using them?

Peter

Linux doesn't have a "list" of detected hardware like MS presents...
The closest will be the '/etc/sysconfig/hwconf' file that kudzu uses.
Try changing '/etc/sysconfig/kudzu' and make 'SAFE=no" then rerun kudzu. This will add a serial port scan to the hardware check.

2nd question... What is telling you the ports don't work?

Regards,
Peter

Your BIOS should not only have settings to turn the serial ports on and off, but should also let you designate which is which. If you have them set to Auto-configure, turn that off and designate one to be COM1 and the other COM2. (Linux doesn't use those COMx names, but your BIOS probably does.) OS/2 was confused when my P166's serial ports were set to Auto, but all was well once I declared port 1 as COM1 and port 2 as COM2.
