serial port linux

I have communication problems with my serial port. I made a loop-back cable (shunting pins 2-3) that I connected to my serial port, while using gtkterm (which opens ttyS0 successfully) I do not have characters echoed back to the terminal window. Here is my laptop configuration:

IBM t42, with serial port enabled (bios) on port replicator, port adress 0x3f8, irq 4

dmseg | grep tty
console [tty0] enabled
serial8250: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a NS16550A
serial8250: ttyS1 at I/O 0x2f8 (irq = 3) is a NS16550A
00:0a: ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a NS16550A
ttyS1: LSR safety check engaged!
ttyS1: LSR safety check engaged!
ttyS1: LSR safety check engaged!
setserial -g /dev/ttyS0
/dev/ttyS0, UART: undefined, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
setserial -g /dev/ttyS1
/dev/ttyS1: No such device
Could anyone help please?
