Serial Port Help

Hi,

I have installed Mandrake Linux 9.1 on a dual boot with Windows XP on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A1600 laptop. The installation went well apart from the non operation of the modem and the 9 pin serial port, both of which work perfectly under Windows.

I am not really concerned about the modem but I do need to use the serial port. This is my first experience with Linux, is this something that needs to be configured or do I require a driver?

Any help which you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi..
Is it detected or not during the boot.
Check by

dmesg | grep tty

Hi,

I tried the command as suggested but it does not operate. Perhaps I am doing something wrong. The device which I am using is an interface to connect the laptop to a motor vehicle diagnostic port. I know the interface and connecting cable are ok as they work fine under windows on the same laptop and vehicle.

Thanks for your help.

michaelk 06-21-2003 03:24 PM

What the other post was saying is your com1 port name in linux is /dev/ttys0.

Do you need a special app with the diagnostic tool or just a terminal app similar to hyperterminal?

One such is minicom.

puma 06-23-2003 03:20 PM

Hi,

Please excuse my lack of knowledge in this area but I am not familiar with hyperterminal or minicom and I only have a very limited knowledge of Linux. I am using software called Freediag, which is a CLI based scantool.

Thanks for your help.

michaelk 06-26-2003 04:09 PM

Check the documentation on freediag as to how to specify the com port.

puma 06-29-2003 12:52 PM

Hi,

I checked the documentation and I found no reference to the com port. I have contacted the software developer and after showing him a copy of the "dmesg" he assures me that Linux is very confused with my serial interface.

Thanks again.
