serial port detection

My little sister has an old polaroid fun flash 640 which is not compatible wtth winxp. I have fedora core 2 on my computer and offered to hook it up to that because linux is so much cooler than windows and it will work. I have gphoto but it cannot find my camera. I have it plugged into the serial port in my computer and when I type dmesg |grep tty the only result is "ttyS0 at I/O 0x3f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A". When I open up gtkam and try to add a camera it only gives me a USB option. Do I have to reboot and leave the camera connected and on to make sure fedora will recognize it and initialize the port or is there another way of doing this?

thanks a bunch!
