serial port configuration

hi all
Currently we are using suse linux 8.1. we are facing problem in serial port communication using RS232 cable.
i don't find serial.conf file in /etc folder. what could be the reason. If so do i need to create serial.conf and I would like to know what kind of information does that text file should have.
in /etc folder.
