Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Serial Mouse Problem

Recently Installed RH9 on a Pentium I @ 166hmz (talk about a monster)

The system has a serial mouse.

During installation....it asked which COM port the mouse was on....I checked CMOS for the com number, but it didn't show.

I assumed that it would be COM 1 and went with that. Hah, to my misfortune, after installation and first boot, i come to realize the mouse does not function.

Is it possible to change the com with only the keyboard nav?

You can go to a console (CTRL+ALT+F1-F6) and edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 to change mouse device and/or protocol (COM1 is /dev/ttyS0)
Then save, go to X screen (Ctrl+alt+F7) and kill X server with ctrl+alt+backspace.
If it doesn't work keep trying. Remember not only the device, but also the protocol is important. Most common was microsoft.
