serial modems and linux RH9

i have a hp pavilion pc with 196 megs ram with two hard disks. hda has windows me and hdb has rh9. the modem is a pci msp-3880 (u) x. though it is listed in the hardware list in the KDE control center, i am unable to make it work.

i am very new to linux and somewhat intimidated. i do not want too much bother, so i want to buy a serial modem.

can anybody tell me if all serial modems get *automatically* recognized by linux? or is there a particular brand that is guaranteed to work under linux?

thanks in advance

I have only used 2 serial modems,Dynalink E and Genius and they were both easy to set up.Have a look through the previous postings on serial modems and you will get a better idea on the subject.
